Law Firms See Benefit for Social Media Marketing
4
In a few recent studies, including one from the ABA about Social Media ROI, many law firms and attorneys are stating that they have seen positive ROI and attracted new business from the use of social media and blogging. The important numbers from the report, which surveyed 179 attorneys from law firms varying in size, show that:
- About 85% of attorneys are using social media in some form, and 70% are using a blog.
- 50% of firms have received leads from their blogs and/or social media.
- Over 40% received publicity and inquiries from journalists related to their blog.
Another study from Hubspot, which is a company that does SEO of all kinds, showed that:
- 57% of companies with a blog have gained at least one new customer from their blog, while an astounding 92% of companies who blog multiple times a day have received at least one lead.
- 77% of Business-to-Consumer companies have received at least one new customer from Facebook.
- 62% of companies using LinkedIn have gained one or more customers through the network.
While many law firms have used these networks and blogging platforms to help with law firm internet marketing by directing links and further traffic to their legal website design, we are now starting to see solid data showing that law firms are receiving direct leads through these platform.
As more consumers are spending more time on the internet and social media sites, they are often finding services they need through these sites, whether directly or indirectly.

Great article! It’s so true how great social media is for promoting yourself! Advertising in this day and age is through word of mouth…but via social media!
Nice data but it’s not clear over what time period in terms of getting clients from social media. No one can overlook social media but in the consumer law sector i.e not business clients it’s still about rankings in google, but this in turn is also becoming intertwined with social media i.e high rankings are becoming more dependent on good social media profile.
Hi, James – thanks for your comment. It’s true that there’s no clear picture of how long a social media campaign will take to attract clients. It’s something that varies greatly depending on your business, location, types of profiles you set up, and whether you hire a marketing agency to handle your social media campaign. Just like SEO!
It’s clear that social media is both A) beginning to have an enormous influence on search engine results and B) hugely important for attracting clients in 2012. It’s important to stick with your social media campaign, build up your profiles, gather some followers, and be patient – it could take a few months.
There was an infographic released by Vizibility/LexisNexis towards the end of last year about social media in the legal sector. What I found most interesting is the the size of the firm was negatively correlated to how important they felt social media was to their marketing campaign. Also a more obvious fact was that the smaller the firm, the less likely they were to have a social media policy.
